Is IPL 15 the last edition for the "king of IPL?"?

From past few years in the IPL, there has been a common question at the end of a Chennai Super Kings match: "Whether Dhoni will play in the next season?" Due to God's grace, till last year, Dhoni played in every season, but there was a statement passed by Dhoni in one of the events that quoted, "My last match will be at Chepauk, Chennai." Since 2020, due to the pandemic, all matches have been played outside of Tamil Nadu, but the time has arrived as we are all set to witness Thala Dhoni play in Chennai this season. Since the venues have been announced, there has been a huge fear in the cricket community, especially among Dhoni's fans, as this might be the last year we see him play. The great leader, who has changed the entire landscape of cricket with his infatic cricketing brain, cool and composed nature, excellent wicket-keeping skills, good reading of the game, and being one of the best finishers of all time, His records are immense. MS Dhoni's journey is so inspiring and the first point of contact for every cricketer to learn, which undoubtedly improves their game. The craze for Dhoni is mindblowing at any stadium across the globe. Across India, every Dhoni fan is excited and nervous at the same time. Let's see how this season unfolds for Dhoni and fans.

MS Dhoni: The GOAT Captain of the Indian Premier League:

Let us discuss a few facts about Dhoni, who is named the "GOAT" captain of the Indian Premier League. The first and most valuable fact is that CSK is the only team in the history of the IPL to have had the greatest captain of all time, i.e., MSD. The example to support this fact is his ability to win games with any team at any stage of the competition. The way he supports and backs up the players despite their performance reflects the qualities of a great captain. He always believes in the process rather than the results, which gives freedom and confidence to those players who are under extreme pressure. But the beauty is that they perform like real kings when the team needs them the most. The performance of Shane Watson during the IPL in 2018 is a true example of the above statement. He played one of his best innings at the finals against SRH, which was possible because of Dhoni's backing him up when he needed it most. If such players get that support from the leader and coach, they should double their efforts to ensure they never let down the belief and faith Dhoni and team management have in them. Likewise, in other teams, the captains give a fair chance for a limited period of time, but this is not applicable for CSK under MSD's captaincy.

Most matches played by a captain in IPL history:

The second fact is that most matches are played by a captain in the IPL, which is 210 matches. Despite CSK being banned for two years, he has been able to play most matches as captain, which reflects his qualities as a great captain, able to lead the team from the front in different situations over the past 15 years. Being a captain for over a decade is itself a great achievement. An amazing and ideal quality MSD acquires as a captain is taking 100% of the blame when the team loses and giving credit to every individual when the team wins. As fans, we wait for Dhoni's post-match presentation ceremony interview as we get to learn various things that can help us improve our leadership skills. The way he told it in one of the interviews, when an interviewer asked about the reason behind handing over the trophy to other team members and standing silently in that group? The answer is very simple, but 100% true and meaningful. It quotes, "As a captain, I have approximately 15 seconds to feel the trophy and the spotlight is on me, which is enough as cricket is a team sport and without their efforts, any victory is not possible." He further added, "This will push us to win more trophies in the future."

Dhoni's IPL leadership: Most wins as a captain:

The third fact is most wins as a captain which is 123 out of 210 matches.  The win percentage is 58.5%, which is an outstanding number as it is not easy to win this many matches for a captain who has been leading the side for a long period of time. He is the only captain to play most IPL finals, with 10 out of 15, which is an unbelievable feat as a player and captain. Out of 10, he played in one playoff finale as a player when he was part of the Rising Pune Supergiants franchise in 2017. Under his captaincy, CSK managed to win four trophies. He is also the highest-paid captain, as there was a huge bidding war at the inaugural season of the IPL in 2008, ewhere every franchise fought hard to ensure he was part of their franchise. But CSK bought him for a whopping price of 1500 dollars, which is one of the best and most costly bids in the history of the Indian Premier League. There are many matches where Dhoni led his team victorious from seemingly impossible situations. The logic of Dhoni taking the game deep is one of key reasons for winning such matches. As fans we can never forget few nail biting matches against MI in 2022, RCB and DC in 10th edition of IPL.

Apart from the above interesting facts, below is a list that supports why he is the "GOAT" of IPL:

  • The only captain to win the IPL trophy at home in the 2011 season, as the finale venue was in Chennai.
  • He is the number one player to score more runs in the 20th over of an inning with 655 runs.
  • First ever captain to win 100 matches as a captain. He holds the record for most dismissals in the history of the IPL with 170 in 220 innings. where 131 are catches and 39 are stumpings.
  •  He also holds the record for most stumpings in the IPL because of his quick glove work behind the stumps.
  • He holds a unique and impressive record of scoring a half century at five different positions, which range from 3 to 7.
  • He is the only player to score more than 15 runs in 20th over while chasing as he was able to do it thrice successfully.
  • Oldest batter to score a fifty in IPL with 40y 262d  against KKR in 2022.
  • With 229 sixes, Dhoni tops the chart for CSK and is fourth overall, which is an incredible feat for any batsman. Hitting long balls is not easy, but Dhoni hits sixes for fun.
  • In the 2019 IPL edition, Chepauk stadium was full as Thala fans came in huge numbers to watch his practice session, which shows the craze, love, and respect shown by fans towards him. a unique feat under his belt.
  • He also holds the record of hitting most number of sixes(52) in 20th over.

The Dhoni Phenomenon: Cricket Legend:

The love for MSD is unreal. The atmosphere in the stadium when Dhoni steps onto the field is charged with electricity and positivity, as his fans erupt with excitement, raising their voices in support of him. The resounding chant of "Dhoni, Dhoni, Dhoni" echoes through the stands, a testament to the passion and energy of his supporters. This phenomenon is not limited to a particular venue, as it occurs at every stadium he plays at across India. On several occasions, even rival team members and commentators have been stunned by the power of the fans' chant. Dhoni's impact transcends his leadership abilities, making him one of the most significant figures in the sports industry and a source of inspiration for millions. Dhoni's unwavering commitment to fitness, unyielding dedication, and remarkable agility on the field are some of the primary factors behind his 15-year-long career in the Indian Premier League. Despite his towering achievements, Dhoni remains a humble individual, quietly stepping away from the game by announcing his retirements in a manner that takes the world and the cricketing community by surprise. He has done this before, as evidenced by his retirement from international cricket.

As ardent fans and cricket enthusiasts, we eagerly anticipate a grand send-off for Dhoni, given his immense contributions to the sport over the years. While we may hope to see him play in several more seasons, it is difficult to ascertain his thoughts, as he has a history of silently announcing his retirement from IPL or cricket altogether. In such an event, fans would undoubtedly be heartbroken, dismayed, and saddened by the absence of a farewell match, an event that must occur under all circumstances. Nonetheless, this season promises to be a joyous and celebratory one for all fans who appreciate Dhoni's significant impact on the IPL and cricket as a whole. The ideal way for Dhoni to bid adieu to cricket would be for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to emerge victorious this season, with every player putting in 200% effort to make this happen. This would signify the end of an era in cricket and the IPL, as Dhoni would retire from the league, leaving behind an unparalleled legacy. As a result, fan excitement will reach unprecedented levels this season, as they clamor to witness the legend play live one last time. It goes without saying that Dhoni is the undisputed king and greatest of all time (GOAT) in the IPL, with his impact on the league being immeasurable.
